Gryphon Audio’s latest EOS 5 rear ‘Stealth’ enclosure, where the front baffle also acts as a diffusor. The EOS 5 also features a 29mm beryllium dome tweeter. This is joined by a 165mm midrange driver and two 240mm bass units, featuring the company’s TPCDtm (Thin-Ply Carbon-fibre Diaphragm) woven carbon-fibre cones. Gryphon uses what it calls an ‘impulse optimiser ring’ placed directly above the voice coil, which it claims delivers the performance of a phase plug with the driver integrity of a dust cap. These are all inspired by the drivers seen in the EOS 2. Everything from the phase integrity of the crossover network to the microadjustments to the feet are given Gryphon Audio’s legendary attention to detail.
Immense rewards
A loudspeaker with the gravitas of the EOS 5 demands the best audio electronics and careful positioning. The rewards, however, are immense. Alan Sircom noted that, “The sound quality of the Gryphon EOS 5 ticks so many boxes. The obvious one is the bass; this is a full-range design for a real-world room, and deep, powerful bass is usually rare in such environments. Here, it has both punch and precision.” He added, ”That obsession Gryphon has over phase pays off when you play the same piece of music at a whisper or a scream and get the same frequency response and dynamic range, all rising out of a very still background.” The conclusion? “the floorstander rewards you with a truly beguiling sound that draws you into the music and keeps you there. This might be a heavyweight loudspeaker, but it still punches up. This is ultra high-end audio for real-world listening rooms.”
